Biography

Thomas Hauser was born in 1984 in Paris, France and is currently based in Marseille, France. He completed his studies at École supérieure d’art & de design Marseille-Méditerranée, France in 2008 and at California College of the Arts (CCA), San Francisco, USA in 2009.

Hauser develops photographic and sculptural works around our perception of memories, the way they are preserved, archived and reproduced. He mainly captures portraits of his family members, close friends, as well as details of classical sculptures, tombs, rocks and architecture. He manipulates the images to construct an erased genealogy, a lost memory, which is brought back to life. As an architect of collective memory, he deconstructs the notion of the archive, subjecting his images to a process of degradation and abstraction. Although plastically connected to photography, conceptually, his work is connected to sculpture and cinema - of which he uses the techniques of montage and temporal fragmentation. Hauser is known for manipulating his photographs by photocopying them, cropping them and printing them again with all kinds of imperfections and traces of use. Their original photograph becomes less significant and is blurred by many interventions. One of his techniques is to create a silk screen print with glue rather than ink. Once the paper is coated with glue, the black matte toner for a laser printer or a copier device is spread over the paper by Hauser. The image appears where the glue and toner connects.
