GUERRE D’HIVER

D’ANNE-VALÉRIE GASC

is a work consisting of 542 194 Molotov cocktails intended to be disseminated. Their number is dictated by the only known serial production of these small arms, manufactured between December 1939 and March 1940 by a state distillery in Rajamäki, following the invasion of Finland by the Soviet Union on November 30, 1939.

As a work, the incendiary device is thought here as an intellectual weapon: black ink replaces gasoline. Rallying sign of a fight for art, the object, paradoxical, knows its possible reversal. The Molotov cocktail, a symbol of insurrection, can become a silk scarf, a standard of social conformity.
