Biography

Alexandre Zhu

Alexandre Zhu, born in Paris in 1993, is of Chinese descent and he currently lives and works in Paris. He graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the School of Visual Art in New York (2016) and completed his MA at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (2018).

Zhou’s work spans from sculpture to photography, but he predominately creates charcoal drawings. His hyper-realistic drawings are partly based on a perceptive disorder. The forms revealed in his drawings are urban, architectural, raw, abstract and ambiguous, provoking the viewer to identify their meaning. Zhu questions the continuous transformation of our environment and its standardisation. He is interested in objects and landscapes common to all modern civilisation, such as architectural residues that he perceives as universal symbols. By modifying their appearance and removing them from all reference points, he seeks to make us forget the initial origin of these innocuous structures and thus wants us to question our relationship to constructions, which are as sudden as their destructions.

Zhu’s work has been shown in several venues internationally, such as the Galerie du Crous, Paris, France (2020), the Cité de la Mode et du Design, Paris, France (2019), Espace Rue de Tanger in Morocco in Casablanca (2019), Galerie 100 Titres, Brussels, Belgium (2019) and at the Design Fair in Como, Lake Como, Italy (2018).
