Biography

Sebastien Reuzé

France, 1970. Vit et travaille à Bruxelles (B).

Sébastien Reuzé’s work focuses on the different practices and mediums of photography, and their relation to selected contemporary myths that have in common a reflection on time, its effects, its nature and its implications.
“Although most of Reuzé’s corpus is photographic, it also extends to the production of sculptural and editorial objects, as well as structural interventions on the display devices of his works. In a general way, he articulates in his work a process of constant renewal of supports, formats, techniques coming to feed an exaltation of the subjective and internalized potential of everyday life and landscape tradition.
Sébastien Reuzé’s recent work includes Indian Sptrings (2012-13), a photographic fiction on the day of a military drone pilot, and the Colorblind Sands series (2012-15), a “matrix” body of photographs inspired by freely from Vermillion Sands, by JG Ballard.
A fictitious, military hero of the US Air Force, evolves in an ambiguous world, between real and virtual, and tinged with disturbing strangeness.
This pilot of drones, solitary and autonomous actuator of reality through the virtual, delivers a fight similar to those of video games but whose impact is well anchored in reality, between maximum detachment of modern contingencies and acceptance of ‘an ultra-guarded techno-computer present’. (Emmanuel Lambion, in FOES exhibition text, solo show realized at Art Brussels 2016, of which Mr Lambion was curator with Maïté Vissault)

Sébastien Reuzé then released the Kodak series, the result of an archaeologist’s work in the industrial wasteland of Kodak Inc. in Châlon-sur-Saone, France.
His Rising Sunset series (2016-2017), follows the previous work Colorblind Sands. It is in this same fictional wilderness of Vermilion Sands that the sun dominates in an overwhelming and fascinating, sensual and brutal way, symbol of a double-edged paradise. Rising Sunset takes the codes of a representation of the ideal, from the 1970s, of an almost mystical dazzling, evoking experiences under LSD.
Since his photography debut, Sébastien Reuzé has been researching color and the notion of a photographic object, refusing the partitioning of genres.
“I practice drawing and processing analog media since my studies in the 90s. Today, and without nostalgia, it is for their technical specificities that these media interest me. This is what digital media can not offer by nature. It is for these papers containing the light and sending it back like glass. These supports, within my practice, interact with the digital. It is nevertheless certain that the sensual relationship implied by the manipulation of these supports in the darkness – total – of the darkroom, and the projections of the light on the sensitive matter, are singular physical and spatial experiences, which imply the body and its movements. The thickness of the photosensitive medium gives the image a depth that the light passes through, not being only expressed in points and numbers, in 1 and 0, but in terms that I call “tonal glitches”. The photosensitive paper becomes a skin. ”
Publishing is an important part of his work: Independance, 2001 (9 flags, VU, Quebec, CA). Constellations, 2002 (ed The Flying Letter). Still Life I II III IV V VI, 2003. CMYK, 2004. Playing Cards, 2006, (BOZAR ed.). Numeristics, 2009 (ed. Wavelengths of Light, 2010 (Contretype ed). Brooklands Morning, 2013, (Herman Byrd). Bullseye of Indian Springs, 2015 (Herman Byrd). The Morning, 2015 (Herman Byrd ed), FOES NOUVELLES, 2016 (Herman Byrd ed), Indian Springs, 2016 (co-ed., Geneva Photography Center + Herman Byrd); Colorblind Sands, 2018 (Art Paper Editions).

He is co-founder, with the artist Erwan Mahéo, avatar Herman Byrd, fictional character who is also publisher.
The work of Sébastien Reuzé has been the subject of awards and residencies, among which: the French Institute’s Hors les Murs Program (2011), the Young Belgian Art Prize (2005), the Residence of the Photographic Center of Île de France (2005) ) … as well as many exhibitions such as: METAPHORAI, Regional Center of Photography Hauts-de-France (2018); RISING SUNSET, Catherine Bastide Gallery (2017); CAMERA (AUTO) CONTROL, Geneva Photography Center (CH, 2016); Magic and Power, Marta Herford Museum, Herford (D, 2016); Morning Etablissements d’en Face, Brussels (B, 2015); Dark Rising Sun, De La Charge, Brussels (B, 2015); The World Center, FRAC Bretagne, Rennes (F, 2014); Young Belgian Art Prize, BOZAR, Brussels (B, 2005); 3 + 3 font …, Photographic Center of Ile-de-France, Pontault-Combault (F, 2005); Sébastien Reuzé, La Criée Center for Contemporary Art, Rennes (F, 2003).
